Exposed ceilings
High, exposed ceiling systems with exposed joists and ductwork ("open plenum") are popular in many buildings as they create a spacious, contemporary, utilitarian look. This is sometimes referred to as "open plenum" design.
The biggest challenge created by an open plenum strategy is maintaining the acoustical performance of the space. If nothing is done to block and absorb sound waves bouncing around the open space from all of the exposed hard surfaces, noise levels can become a significant challenge.
